Power Play: Creating Smart Buildings through Model-Based Energy Management
The graph above shows real-time power usage for an entire home, as well as for each of its individual circuits. The data in the graph is part of a NSF Early CAREER grant awarded to computer engineer David Irwin (Electrical and Computer Engineering). The project focuses on developing and using highly precise models of how everyday devices in buildings use electricity to analyze the building's aggregate electricity usage recorded by a smart meter. Ultimately, the goal is to make homes and buildings as 'smart' and sustainable as possible by using the models to design automated discovery, monitoring, and scheduling techniques for everyday devices.
