Hidden "Monster": New Galaxy Discovered

Pictured above is an artists impression of a "monster" galaxy, discovered by a team of astronomers including UMass Amherst assistant professor Kate Whitaker. It was discovered when the researchers noticed a faint light using ALMA – the Atacama Large Millimeter Array –a collection of 66 radio telescopes located in the high mountains of Chile. The signal is estimated to have taken 12.5 billion years to reach Earth. The scientific community once regarded such monster galaxies as folklore because there was no evidence for them, until now.
