Domain: Discovering New Complexity in Bacterial Membranes
The image above depicts still frames from time-lapse microscopy of growing Mycobacterium smegmatis, expressing fluorescent red and green proteins targeted to the canonical plasma membrane (green) and a novel growth pole associated membrane domain (red). UMass Amherst molecular microbiologists Jennifer Hayashi (lead author and doctoral student), Yasu Morita and colleagues have demonstrated that mycobacteria have a distinct membrane domain enriched at the growth pole housing many essential biosynthetic enzymes and their products. These findings suggest a new potential for spatiotemporal control of polar cell elongation in a group which includes disease causing bacteria. Learn more.
