Derby: Student Engineers Design Prototypes for Smart Cars

The image above shows one of the smart cars created by teams of 185 undergraduates in a course taught by David McLaughlin (Electrical and Computer Engineering) for students studying mechanical and industrial engineering. The derby demonstration marks the culmination of a semester-long assignment to build model cars using Arduino processors, motors, transistors, gears, and various sensors to monitor and control vehicle movement. The course, Fundamentals in Electrical Engineering, provides non-electrical engineering majors with the electrical and electronic engineering concepts and device knowledge necessary to work effectively in multi-disciplined design, development, and manufacturing groups as professional engineers.
