Center Spotlight: Improving Transportation Through Research, Outreach and Training

The image above shows the flashing yellow arrow being installed on traffic lights across the state (and Nation), one of many innovative traffic control devices designed to improve traffic safety. The UMass Amherst Transportation Center (College of Engineering) has received $6 million in funding from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to combine and run the state’s Local Technical Assistance Program, the Transportation Training Institute, and the Cooperative Research Program as one unit. With the funding, the Center is consolidating several programs under one umbrella to increase collaborations and provide a framework to launch new initiatives. The aim is to foster innovations and speed up the implementation of new programs and ideas, technology transfer and the training of transportation engineers across the state. The Center is directed by civil and environmental engineer Michael Knodler. Learn more.
