Building Walls: Designing Solutions for Sustainable Communities

The rocks in the wall above - in the village of Kumik in India - were harvested from the mountain, in a remote landscape with few available resources. In this arid environment, plants must be protected by stone walls to keep grazing animals, such as goat, sheep, and yaks, from eating them. The walls enclose a new community center and outdoor spaces currently under construction. Architect and planner Carey Clouse (Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, Art and Design) and her colleagues are working closely with the Kumikpas to design a new community in this remote region.
