Funding Searches & Alerts

The following tools are available to help investigators find extramural funding for research and scholarly activities.

Funding Databases

Grant Forward is an improved version of the University of Illinois IRIS grant search service. The new platform will feature enhanced search and user account interfaces as well as new tools to help institutions annotate and disseminate grant information.  Grant Forward features more than 10,000 research funding opportunities from U.S. federal agencies and private foundations. It includes in-depth and up-to-date indexing and abstracting of critical grant information; subject search access; limited submissions management; customizable alerts service; and an expertise profile service, private foundation sources, and research fellowships.

The centralized, searchable clearing-house for over 900 grant programs from the 26 federal grant-making agencies. Several e-mail alert features are available.  You do NOT need to register in order to view funding opportunities.  ALL proposals must be submitted through the Office of Grants and Contracts Administration.

Funding Alerts

Major Federal Funding Opportunities:

  • Many of the major federal agencies provide funding alerts through, so this one subscription  will give the user access to a large list of agency funding opportunities.  The list of agencies can be found here.
  • Sign up for here: email alerts and RSS feeds - Receive notifications of new grant opportunity postings   and updates on You do not need to be a registered user of to sign-up for this service.

Other Funding Alert Services

  • Grant Forward- Sign up with Grant Forward in order to recieve notifications of funding opportunities.  Click here for a user guide to Grant Forward. Note: You must use your UMass email address in order to sign up for grant forward.
  • Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)- Recieve notifications of funding opportunities through email from AHRQ.  Adjust what AHRQ sends you through the preferences section during sign up, and check the boxes of the funding alerts only so that you do not recieve other AHRQ newsletters and alerts.
  • Air Force Office of Scientific Research- The Air Force Office of Scientific Research provides a LinkedIn page that includes a funding section within it.  Simply click on the funding section on LinkedIn to view their funding information.
  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)- Recieve funding alerts from CIHR in the form of an RSS Feed.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-This is an RSS feed that gives the user updated information on funding opportunities and grant news from the EPA.
  • Federal Railroad Association (FRA)-Recieve email alerts of new grant opportunities offered by the FRA. Be sure to adjust your preferences upon sign up and select the grants and loans box to recieve your email alerts.
  • Institute of Education Sciences (IES)- Recieve email notification of any new funding opportunities from the Institute of Education Sciences. When you click the link you will be transported to the sign up page.  Click on the General IES News and Information drop down (select the + sign) and check the box of the funding alerts only.  This will ensure that you will recieve only funding emails from the IES.
  • IRIS Funding Alerts - The IRIS Alert Service allows you to create your own IRIS search profile. Your search profile will be run automatically at specified intervals and will alert you to upcoming funding opportunities in your areas of interest.
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)- Researchers can sign up to recieve email alerts on funding and research news/opportunities a week in advance of them being posted on the NASA website.
  • National Education Association-The National Education Association providies a RSS feed that gives the user funding alerts and updates.
  • National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)- The National Endowment for the arts has a RSS feed that supplies updates on both new funding opportunities as well as NEA news when subscribed.      
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH)- The NIH provides funding alert email notifications to subscribers. To sign up, simply click the National Institutes of Health (NIH) blue hyperlink provided above. You can manually search for NIH funding by clicking here: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Extramural Research. The NIH Office of Extramural Researh is the largest funder of biomedical research in the world, NIH funds research in just about every area that's remotely related to human health and disease. This page includes extensive information about NIH grants, as well as a place to search NIH funding programs. NIH also has an advanced search page, which offers a wide range of search options.
  • National Science Foundation (NSF)- The NSF provides funding alert email notifications on the funding opportuntities of interest to you. To sign up for these notifications, simply select the National Science Foundation (NSF) blue hyperlink provided above. The NSF is an independent federal agency that funds approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted at America's colleges and universities.   • SBIR/STTR-Alerting Service - Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's free, award-winning SBIR/STTR Alert Service is a nationwide resource that improves small business access to a substantial source of R&D capital for entrepreneurial ventures: $2.2 billion in annual federal research and development funds from 11 federal agencies.

The Foundation Center offers the following free "Funding Watch" newsletters in Arts Funding, Health Funding and Education Funding.  They are only available to registered users, but registration is free.
