Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Karen Moré as the new Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research & Engagement, Research Compliance, effective October 16, 2024. Karen will provide strategic vision and oversight for our offices of Research Risk Management, the Human Research Protection Office, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and other groups focused on research security and integrity.
Karen was selected following a national search because of her deep knowledge and more than 20 years of experience providing leadership and oversight support for academic programs of research compliance. She will join the UMass Amherst community from the University of Connecticut, where she most recently held the position of Director of Research Integrity and Compliance for UConn and UConn Health. Her prior positions at UConn have included Director of Research Compliance Services and Executive Program Director of IACUC.
Karen possesses a strong background in law, safety, animal welfare, human subject protection, and responsible conduct of research. She holds a Master of Science in Natural Resources, a Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Environmental Planning and Management, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, all from UConn. She also completed coursework focused on civil procedure, contracts, property & health care law, and regulation from the UConn School of Law.
I am excited to welcome Karen to the UMass Amherst community. Her extensive experience in research compliance will be invaluable in advancing our research enterprise while navigating the evolving regulatory landscape. I also wish to thank the individuals who served on the search committee and recruited Karen to UMass Amherst: Carl Rust, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Corporate Engagement (chair); Mark Tuominen, Associate Dean of Research and Innovation, College of Natural Sciences; Melinda LeLacheur, Program Coordinator, Research Compliance; Alene Denson, Director of the Office of Post-Award Management; Michael Esmail, Director of Animal Care Services; and Ilia Karatsoreos, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.
