Research Development and Engagement

Research Development and Engagement units offer a range of services aimed at identifying funding opportunities; developing large-scale interdisciplinary center-level proposals; and providing a wide variety of outlets for applied and interdisciplinary research and the dissemination of scholarly knowledge through the technology transfer office, UMass Innovation Institute, and the UMass Press.

Office of Research Development

The Office of Research Development (ORD) provides support and services in four main areas: development of large-scale interdisciplinary center-level proposals involving multiple researchers; support and training for faculty in effective proposal development; strategic research development initiatives, including coordination with government agencies and other partners; and administration of University internal grant programs. Learn more about ORD.

Technology Transfer Office

The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is responsible for supporting the commercialization of UMass Amherst research for public benefit while protecting intellectual property and providing recognition to University researchers and inventors. To facilitate new products and services development staff assist at each step of the process–from licensing intellectual property to processing patents, copyrights, and trademarks. The tech transfer team serves the entire campus, from new scientific inventions to the creative arts. Staff provide services for both start-up and existing companies interested in translating early-stage technology into commercially successful products. Learn more about TTO.

UMass Innovation Institute

The UMass Innovation Institute at UMass Amherst (UMII) is reinventing its approach to research and engagement with industry. The aim is simple: to ensure that campus discoveries and technologies move forward into society. A “one-stop” service streamlines the process by which industry can collaborate with UMass faculty and students on both basic and applied research. Learn more about UMII.

University of Massachusetts Press

The University of Massachusetts Press is the book-publishing arm of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Its mission is to publish first-rate books, edit them carefully, design them well, and market them vigorously. In so doing, it supports and enhances the university's role as a major research institution. In recent years, the Press has focused primarily on books in the field of American studies broadly defined—books that explore the history, politics, literature, culture, and environment of the United States—as well as works with a transnational perspective. In addition to publishing works of scholarship, the Press produces books of more general interest for a wider readership.

As part of Research and Engagement, UMass Press advances scholarship by publishing the work of scholars from many institutions; sustaining and developing specialized scholarship within particular fields; and publishing books of interest to citizens of Massachusetts and the region. Learn more about UMass Press.

Communications for Research and Engagement

Communications oversees the Research and Engagement website and develops and provides support for communications across Research and Engagement units. Research and Engagement collaborates with University Relations to produce content that highlights university research through stories and images.
