Subaward Proposals - UMass as Non-Lead

When the UMass Amherst PI will collaborate with another institution as a non-lead or a subaward to that institution, it is important to route a subaward proposal as a New proposal in Kuali. This usually happens prior to the lead institution's submission of their proposal to the sponsor. OPAS is required to review and submit this type of proposals just like all others.  Sometimes, UMass Amherst will be invited to join a project after it has been awarded by the sponsor. This also requires a New proposal to be routed in Kuali.

If the proposal was submitted without an OPAS review, the University still requires an OPAS review prior to award set up. In this case, an Internal proposal is routed in Kuali. If any compliance or budgetary issues exist that cannot be resolved, the University may decline the subaward agreement. We encourage you to work with OPAS from the beginning to avoid such situations.
