Beginning Fall 2024, UMass Amherst will award 12 credits for the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy and 15 credits for the Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction. Please send your official high school transcript with the seal to:

Official transcripts must be sent directly from your previous institution to UMass. We are unable to accept official transcripts directly from students.
If the seal has been awarded on your high school diploma, please submit a photocopy of the diploma with your opt in form to be verified. For the 2024-2025 academic year, students will receive generic credit with the exception of Spanish. Students who earn the seal of biliteracy in Spanish with be awarded Spanish 110, 120, 230 and 240. Student who earn the seal of biliteracy with distinction will earn Spanish 110, 120, 230, 240 and 301.
1) Students must submit the appropriate documentation and the opt in form to receive credit. Please submit the form to Janet Danylieko, Assistant Registrar for Academic Requirements and Transfer Credit.
2) Departments may choose to change the award for each calendar year, so please be aware that equivalencies will be updated each year. Please be aware if your language has an equivalency for which you received the same equivalency via test or transfer credit, you may only receive credit once.
3) If you change your major or minor, change to a dual degree candidate, or add a secondary major your award will be reevaluated.
4) If you have received Mass Transfer Benefits, your record may be evaluated in accordance with your previous institution’s award. We will award on a case by case basis as consistent with the prior record and the UMass award as possible.
5) Once a credit has been awarded to your record, it can not be revoked.
