Jeff Smith - Headshot
Jeff Smith brings over two decades of leadership and service to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he has been a driving force in enhancing student experiences since joining the Athletics Department in 2001. In his new role as Executive Director of Recreation and Wellbeing, Jeff is committed to fostering an inclusive, vibrant campus environment where all students can thrive—physically, mentally, and socially.

Associate Director for Facilities & Operations

Deb joined the Recreation & Wellbeing team in the Spring of 2024. She received her M.S degree from Western Kentucky University, specializing in facility and event management in 2017 and a B.S in Exercise Science with a focus in Human Performance from Southern Connecticut State University in 2015. Prior to UMass Deb held two positions at UConn working in the Athletics and Campus Recreation departments overseeing the daily maintenance and operations of various facilities. Additionally, she served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities and Events at Wittenberg University, managing operations, schedules, and external rentals of the athletic facilities. Deb also has experience in the parks and recreation sector beyond higher education, having served as the Assistant Park Manager for the City of Indianapolis. She holds a certification in Facility & Event Management, Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and is a CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor with the American Red Cross.

Associate Director for Programs and Student Development

Jason earned his doctorate in Higher Education in 2023 from UMass. His dissertation is titled, "The Professionalization of Collegiate Recreation and the Educational Pathways of its Practitioners: An Exploratory Study." Jason received an M.S. in Exercise and Sport Sciences in 2005 from the University of Florida. At Florida, Jason was a graduate assistant in the Department of Recreational Sports and worked as a high school basketball and football official as a member of the Mid-Florida Officials Association. A double UMass alum, Jason received his B.A. in Philosophy and worked in the Campus Recreation program as a sports supervisor and official. Prior to returning to his alma mater in 2006, Jason was the Coordinator of Intramural Sports at Missouri State University. Jason is a former Massachusetts high school basketball official and member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.

Associate Director for Wellbeing Education & Services

Keri Russo
Keri joined the Recreation & Wellbeing team in September 2025 after working for four years at the Armed Forces Wellness Center in Stuttgart, Germany, where her main responsibility was managing healthy sleep and stress management programs for active duty service members and their dependents. Previously, she worked as a certified athletic trainer for Ithaca College, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and Baystate Sports Medicine Practice. Keri graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.S. in Kinesiology, concentrating in athletic training, and earned an M.S. in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in sports psychology from Ithaca College. She is a certified HeartMath mentor, BLS/CPR provider, basic ski patroller, and certified athletic trainer. In her spare time, Keri enjoys traveling, skiing, cycling, and reading. She lives with her husband Brian and their dog Finny.

Gwyn joined the Recreation and Wellbeing team in November 2025. Before joining RecWell, Gwyn graduate from Hampshire College in 2020 with her Bachelor of Arts, studying the intersection of gender and Title IX legislation in the progression of women’s sports. From there, she went on to study at Bowling Green State University where she got her Masters. Her thesis was titled, “A Critical Analysis of Transgender High School Athletic Association Polies” where she analyzed the language of current high school athletic association policies to show how it creates barriers for trans youth to participate

Shawn graduated from Smith Vocational High School in metal fabrication and came to UMass in 2001. Shawn worked with Landscape Services and Custodial Services before coming to Recreation & Wellbeing in 2009. Shawn enjoys golf and exercising.

Amanda Surgen head shot

At RecWell, Amanda oversees operations and scheduling for turf, field, and court spaces, supporting intramural sports, club sports, and special events. She is passionate about fostering inclusive, high-quality recreational spaces and mentoring students to develop skills that last a lifetime. Outside of work, Amanda enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with her dog, Mookie.

Greg joined the Recreation & Wellbeing team here at UMass Amherst in June of 2024. He graduated from Westfield State University with a bachelor's degree in Movement Science with a concentration in Exercise Science in the spring of 2018. During his time there he was a proud member of the Rugby Club where he played for 3 years. Zoe joined the RecWell in 2025 as the Coordinator for Group Fitness. Zoe graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor's of Science in Health Studies. As a student at JMU she worked as a Group Exercise Instructor and Manager. In 2019 she served as Interim Group Exercise Coordinator until June of 2020. She then worked in corporate fitness at Plus One - Optum in New York City. Working as an Exercise Specialist at the Goldman Sachs Headquarters site. In August of 2024 she started working at Cornell University working as a Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, Physical Education

Sam joined the UMass RecWell department in June 2025. Prior to UMass, Sam worked for Campus Recreation at the University of Vermont as a student staff member in Sport Programs. Upon graduation, she joined the professional staff at the University of Vermont as the Sport Programs Manager and spent two years enhancing special events and sports offerings. She has additionally worked as a USSF-certified Grade 8/Grassroots soccer official in various New England leagues and tournaments, including the Nordic Cup, GPS Memorial Day tournament, and Needham Tournament.

Dave Litterer Headshot

Dave has worked at UMass in several departments since 1984. Dave joined Recreation & Wellbeing in 1999. He received a B.A. in Economics at UMass in 1982 and a Master's degree in Public Administration from UMass in 1997. A United States soccer historian, Dave is the author of "An Overview of American Soccer History" and a contributing author of the book THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN SOCCER HISTORY. An inveterate "trailblazer," Dave enjoys clearing and marking hiking trails in Western Massachusetts.

David’s love for the outdoors was fostered early by his family as he explored the woods and White Mountains of New Hampshire as a child. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2012 with a degree in Kinesiology: Outdoor Education and has been working in the outdoor industry ever since.

After college, David spent a few years as a whitewater guide in northern Maine during the summers and as a ski and snowboard instructor in Vermont before heading west to Colorado. Once he made the move, there was no looking back. For the past ten years, he has been guiding and managing outdoor

April has been at UMass since 2001. She previously worked with UMass Extension’s Nutrition Education Program, and then with the Center for Health Promotion. She is passionate about prevention, inclusion, and wellbeing for students and the campus community. Her work includes directing the Peer Health Education program, teaching a resiliency course, creating opportunities for contemplative practice, overseeing the Paws Program, and incorporating various elements of positive psychology into her work.
