About

Jeff Smith brings over two decades of leadership and service to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he has been a driving force in enhancing student experiences since joining the Athletics Department in 2001. In his new role as Executive Director of Recreation and Wellbeing, Jeff is committed to fostering an inclusive, vibrant campus environment where all students can thrive—physically, mentally, and socially.

Jeff most recently served as Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations, overseeing communications, marketing, fan engagement, ticketing, creative services, broadcasting, and corporate partnerships. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his collaborative leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering dedication to student wellbeing and development.

His work across student-athlete development, wellness, and internal operations—including oversight of sports medicine, performance, and behavioral health—reflects a holistic approach to student support. Jeff has built lasting partnerships across Student Affairs, academic units, and campus services to promote health, connection, and belonging.

With a background in athletic training and sports medicine, both at UMass and peer institutions like UCLA and the University of Denver, Jeff brings deep expertise in creating accessible and supportive recreational environments. His long-standing service as a sport program administrator for multiple varsity teams has given him a broad understanding of the role recreation plays in student engagement and success.

A proud alumnus of both UCLA (B.S., Kinesiology) and UMass Amherst (M.S., Exercise Science), Jeff is dedicated to building a culture of wellbeing for every student. He is married to Justine and has three sons, Brendan, Ryan and Jake.
