About
A native of Northampton, MA, Amanda Surgen joined UMass Amherst Recreation & Wellbeing in July 2025 as the Assistant Director of Operations & Facilities. She brings over two decades of experience in collegiate athletics, recreation, and student development, including 20 years at Hampshire College, where she served as Associate Athletic Director, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, and head coach of the women’s soccer program.
At Hampshire, Amanda built a competitive women’s soccer program from the ground up, guiding her team to multiple postseason appearances, a conference division title, and a berth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Women’s Soccer National Championship. She was twice named Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Coach of the Year (2013, 2014) and led teams recognized with multiple YSCC Team Sportsmanship Awards. Under her leadership, numerous players earned YSCC All-Conference and USCAA National All-Academic honors. Beyond athletic success, Amanda developed leadership and mentorship programs for student-athletes and student employees, advancing equity and inclusion initiatives campus-wide.
Her earlier coaching career includes serving as assistant coach for NCAA Division II softball at Saint Michael’s College and NCAA Division III softball at Middlebury College, specializing in hitting and outfield instruction. She also gained front-office and game-day operations experience as a marketing and promotions intern with the Vermont Lake Monsters, the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals.
Amanda is a University of Vermont alum, where she was a four-year starter for the NCAA Division I softball team. As a left fielder, she earned America East First Team honors, NCAA Division I All-New England recognition, and multiple America East All-Conference awards (First and Second Team selections). She was named team MVP in 2000, became the 10th player in program history to record 100 career hits, and ranked among UVM’s all-time leaders in doubles and total hits.
In her senior year, Amanda received the prestigious Russell O. Sunderland Memorial Trophy Rally Award — presented annually to one male and one female senior student-athlete who best exemplify athletic achievement, leadership, character, and persistence in overcoming obstacles. Despite significant injuries, she competed in 95% of the team’s games over her collegiate career.
At RecWell, Amanda oversees operations and scheduling for turf, field, and court spaces, supporting intramural sports, club sports, and special events. She is passionate about fostering inclusive, high-quality recreational spaces and mentoring students to develop skills that last a lifetime.
Outside of work, Amanda enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with her dog, Mookie.
