What does the mentoring commitment look like?

Mentors are matched to their mentees from approximately December/January to June.

Mentors are asked to be in regular contact with their mentee via email, video conference, or telephone, and can expect to answer questions on topics including work/life balance, graduate school, breaking into a particular sector, resume preparation, networking, and more.

The time commitment varies according to mentor/mentee schedules. However, we request that mentors schedule a brief, weekly or every-other week check-in throughout the semester.  Mentors will receive a regular email with conversation prompts to help facilitate these conversations.

What type of person is UWiL looking for?

Our mentors come from all walks of life, but generally have experience in the public sector -- whether through their regular jobs or volunteer activities. They generally have at least 5 years of post-baccalaureate professional experience and possess a genuine desire to help college students in their professional development.

While we encourage anyone who is interested in supporting student success to volunteer, we typically have strong needs for individuals with international/foreign affairs experience and with social justice and advocacy backgrounds. We also seek individuals who can share their experiences of being a BIPOC woman in politics/policy.

I'm interested. What's next?

Fill out this survey so we can learn more about you and match you to a student.

If you've mentored for us in the past, you will still need to fill out a new survey every year.
