Sindiso Mnisi, legal studies, has published her latest book "Alter-Native Constitutionalism: Common-ing ‘Common' Law, Transforming Property in South Africa" on Cambridge University Press. The book addresses the constitutional paradox of South Africa, which simultaneously has "one of the most progressive Constitution in the world... while also being one of the most unequal countries in the world," which has resulted in a crisis of legitimacy. Mnisi develops a new framework called "Alter-Native Constitutionalism," which is defined more by an "equitable amalgamation of customary and common law with vernacular law" that aims for a more just post-colonial constitutional order than the current legal regime represents.
