In a new article for The Conversation, Paul Collins discusses the politics behind recent conjecture on the future of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. In the piece, Collins describes how the possibility of the Senate flipping to Democratic control after the 2026 midterm elections is creating pressure from the political right on Alito to retire and give President Trump the opportunity to entrench a conservative majority on the Supreme Court for generations to come. In reviewing the Supreme Court confirmation process, Collins also discusses how Democrats would have little input during the current session to impact a possible Republican nominee to the Supreme Court, citing the end of the filibuster in 2017.
