Funded by the NSF-funded ADVANCE-IT grant, Joya Misra and her colleagues Ember Kane-Lee, Ethel Mickey, and Laurel Smith-Doerr have published a new article in the journal Social Problems. “'I don’t believe that I have been wanted': Processes of Overinclusion and Exclusion in Racialized and Gendered Organizations" considers how some groups -- particularly women of color -- are over-included in devalued tasks and actively excluded from jobs, promotions, and resources, while both men and women of color face "passive exclusion" from mentoring, research collaboration, and decision-making. This article is related to their 2024 article in Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, which further identifies strategies that lead to more inclusive departments.
