In a new article in Prospect Magazine titled, "The AI race shows no country can stay in its lane," Ethan Zuckerman, associate professor of public policy, communication, and information, contends that economic isolationism is a poor policy position in a complex age. Using the emergence of Deepseek as a example of a lower-cost rival to Anthropic and OpenAI, Zuckerman argues that the intricate nature of semiconductor supply chains and the advanced software that runs AI systems are incongruent with a protectionist and anti-higher education policy regime.
