In his latest column in Prospect Magazine, Ethan Zuckerman argues that while artificial intelligence may help elevate the level of experts, it is likely more of a hindrance for novices learning a new subject. Zuckerman draws on Garry Kasparov's "centaur" concept as well as his experience with his own expert-level student, who, with an AI assistant, can reliably produce "20 times more" work than he can. However, he points to recent research using Github data that points to the possibility that AI use by non-experts may remove the "hard yards" needed by young learners to gain important baseline skills that are needed to advance.
