Professor Sargent's research interests include race and racism, economic sociology, comparative and historical methods, the politics of governmental reform, and urban sociology. He is working on a book manuscript that analyzes the Federal Reserve's efforts to implement the Community Reinvestment Act and the Truth in Lending Act.

He received his PhD from Northwestern University and his master's degrees from Northwestern and the University of Chicago and was a postdoctoral research associate in sociology studying legal financial obligations with Dr. Alexes Harris at the University of Washington.
