Emergency Room Technician
"My study of public policy equipped me with a broader understanding of the healthcare system and the policies that influence emergency care delivery."
My Role: I worked at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital as an Emergency Room Technician. In my role as an ER Technician, I assisted in life-saving interventions and supported the medical team in the only ER on the island. My responsibilities included various forms of patient care, lab work/cardiac monitoring, managing medical equipment, and ensuring the smooth operation of the ER during emergencies.
I Learned: This experience was invaluable in helping me grow both personally and professionally. I further developed my critical skills in emergency care, patient communication, and teamwork under high-pressure situations. Working in a small, isolated community taught me the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness, as we often had to manage complex cases with limited resources. I also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of efficient emergency response and the impact it has on patient outcomes.
How My Classes Helped: My study of public policy equipped me with a broader understanding of the healthcare system and the policies that influence emergency care delivery. This background helped me appreciate the systemic challenges in emergency response and the need for policy improvements. The experience will undoubtedly inform my public policy studies, particularly in areas related to healthcare policy, emergency response, and resource allocation. It has reinforced my commitment to advocating for policy changes that improve efficiency and outcomes in emergency medical services.
