Mike Hazard of New England Reclamation, Inc. in Enfield, Conn. tears up the pavement in the east side of Lot 32 using a Roadtek RX60B milling machine. Plans call for the lot to be resurfaced this week, weather permitting, according to Parking Services manager Mike Brennan. Repaving is also planned in Lot 64 near Grinnell Arena and lots around Lincoln Apartments and Van Meter House. Parking Services is spending $168,000 to resurface the lots.

Interim dean of NSM named; Robert Hallock fills post held by Slakey
Physics professor Robert Hallock has been named interim dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, effective Sept. 1. Hallock fills the vacancy created earlier this summer when dean Linda Slakey was appointed interim dean of Commonwealth College.

Last-minute glitch delays opening of child care centers
The scheduled Sept. 5 reopening of two campus child care facilities may be delayed for nearly a week after to allow the installation of additional equipment for an automated fire alarm system.

Campus to assist in developing system-wide UMass Online
Faculty and administrators are preparing to work through issues around the development of a system-wide distance learning program. The Board of Trustees approved moving forward with the project at its Aug. 2 meeting on the Worcester campus.

Computer Science Research Center dedication set for Sept. 14
A gala celebration to mark the official opening of the $14.6 million Computer Science Research Center will be held Sept. l4-15. Thursday's events will feature an open house and demonstrations of various technologies being developed by University computer scientists, as well as the awarding of three honorary degrees; activities on Friday will focus on technical talks and seminars geared toward the research community.

Alumna shares efforts of two lifetimes: Eleanor Lachman donates plants she and late husband, William, developed
Some campus spots are sporting an array of hostas and day lilies, thanks to the generosity of alumna Eleanor Lachman,'37, '38G, who gave the plant material to the University last year. And she decided to donate more plants for additional gardens this year, according to Marc Fournier, assistant director of Physical Plant for Grounds Management.

Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs honored
Cora B. Marrett was one of three prominent women educators honored last month by the American Psychological Association during the organization's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
