More than 50 high school bands from New England, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania participated in the 18th annual Band Day performance during the Villanova football game on Oct. 19. Telescope project gains $10m
The University has been allocated $10 million for construction of the Large Millimeter Telescope in the final fiscal year 2003 Defense Appropriations bill.

Six receive President's Public Service Awards

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences is opening a guest lecture in its course on terrorism preparedness to the campus at large 1-2:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the Student Union Ballroom.

UMPD hires swell ranks to full strength
The hiring of 10 new officers over the past year has brought the UMass Police up to full strength "for the first time in many years," according to Chief Barbara O'Connor, who officiated at a swearing-in ceremony for the new hires on Oct. 15 at the Mullins Center.

Alhabeeb exhibits calligraphy
 "Islamic Art: Peace and Beauty," an exhibition of Arabic calligraphy by M.J. Alhabeeb, associate professor of Resource Economics, opens Monday, Oct. 28 at the Augusta Savage Gallery in New Africa House.
