Sturm, associate dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts
(CHFA), has been named interim director of Continuing Education,
according to John Mullin, interim vice chancellor for University
Outreach. The appointment is effective Sept. 1 and is open-ended.
Sturm replaces Kevin Aiken, who recently retired.
"I think
we are very fortunate to have a person of Harlan's depth and experience
and I think he will bring new energy and a new sense of direction
to Continuing Education," Mullin said. "We are honored
that he has chosen to accept the position."
"The Division of
Continuing Education has had a long, stable, and successful period
under the leadership of Kevin Aiken," said Sturm. "I look
forward to working with the staff of the division and the faculty
at the University to continue that success and meet the challenges
facing us today as we expand even more into outreach programs and
distance education."
Sturm joined the faculty
in 1969. He was acting chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese
from 1977-78, and chairman from 1980-87. In the spring of 1991,
he was appointed acting associate dean in the College of Humanities
and Fine Arts; in the fall of that year, he was named to the permanent
post. From 1998-2001, he was also acting chair of the Department
of French and Italian.
Sturm has chaired or
been a member of numerous committees for the campus, for CHFA, and
for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. He chaired the Faculty
Senate Rules Committee for two years, and was chair of the Graduate
Council for three years.
He has written numerous
books, articles, reviews, and scholarly papers, and a book he edited
with Edward Friedman, "Never-ending Adventure: Studies in Medieval
and Early Modern Spanish Literature in Honor of Peter N. Dunn,"
has just been published.
Lee Edwards, dean of
CHFA, said, "Harlan and I have worked extremely well together
for 11 years. We really were a team. I'm going to miss him. The
entire college is going to miss him. But, of course, we wish him
well in his new venture."
