The construction underway on campus is encouraging,
but, as is so often the case, there is a downside - the appearance
of the campus. It can't help but leave a negative impression on
prospective applicants and their parents, conferees, and other
visitors - not to mention returning students. While some signs
identify some of the projects, this may not be sufficient to offset
the "visual pollution."
I urge, therefore, that an information sheet be
prepared (by whom?) explaining the various projects and that they
be made available campus-wide, especially at Admissions, the Robsham
Visitors Center, the Lincoln Campus Center, by tour guides and
Admissions representatives, included with registration mailings,
as well as handed out as students check in to residence halls
in the fall. It should also be in an early edition of the Collegian.
It is the thoughtful thing to do. It should not
be apologetic, but should be upbeat and "pardon the inconvenience"
for, indeed, it is progress.
