Fournier takes job at WasteCap

R  Marc Fournier, assistant director for Grounds Management at Physical Plant, is leaving this week for a new job as executive director of WasteCap of Massachusetts, a private non-profit founded in 1993 to promote and implement recycling, waste reduction, and use of recycled materials within the state's business community.

"I am looking forward to the enthusiasm, energy, hard work and creativity that Marc will bring to WasteCap," said Stephen Greene, corporate environmental manager for Polaroid Corporation and chairman of WasteCap. "Marc will make good use of the experience and training he has gained in his past endeavors. These include the management of a $4 million annual department budget, extensive recycling and waste management at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, participation on non-profit boards, including Waste-Cap's and recognition of his excellent work though several awards."

Fournier has worked on campus since 1978, when he joined the University Conference Services staff. In 1989, he was hired as the campus's first waste manager and he and his team developed one of the nation's leading university waste management programs. In 1996, Fournier was promoted to assistant director for Grounds Management, where he was responsible for Landscape Services, Construction Services, Pest Control, Waste Management and Moving Services and Fleet Services.

Grounds Management has been a leader in developing and implementing sustainable operations, including an aggressive recycling program (currently recycling 53 percent of the University's waste), integrated pest management, food and yard waste composting, electronics demanufacturing and recycling, conversion from diesel to biodiesel, and an alternative fuel vehicle fleet comprised of 30 electric vehicles.

He became involved with WasteCap in the mid-1990s when he joined its board of directors.

An Amherst campus alumnus, Fournier holds a B.S. focused on Forestry and Community Psychology and an MBA with concentrations in Environmental Management and Organizational Behavior.
