'High stakes' decisions loom ahead, provost tells faculty
With budget reductions and early retirement incentives draining away faculty positions, interim Provost Charlena Seymour this week outlined an academic planning process aimed at identifying long-term priorities while carrying the campus through its immediate financial crisis.

393 apply for early retirement
After weeks of meeting with employees considering early retirement, Human Resources processed 393 applications for the state-sponsored program before the deadline of Feb. 15. Ninety-three faculty, 111 professional staff, and 189 classified staff applied through Human Resources.

Faculty Senate endorses cuts in Athletic Department funds
After a lengthy debate Feb. 14, the Faculty Senate voted to recommend that the campus contribution to the intercollegiate athletic budget be reduced by $2 million over the next four fiscal years.

Senate adopts merger procedures
The Faculty Senate approved a set of procedures to be followed in the merger of academic programs after a brief discussion at its Feb. 14 meeting.

COMECC surpasses goal of $440,000
Although the FY2002 Commonwealth of Massachusetts Employees Charitable Campaign (COMECC) fell short of its 50 percent participation goal, it exceeded its monetary goal of $440,000. Approximately 44 percent of campus employees contributed a total of $443,794.92.

Greetings from UMass Amherst
Students, employees, alumni and other friends of the University now have a new way to reach out to others and share a bit of the campus at the same time. A new University Web site allows users to send electronic postcards of the campus, complete with a personalized message.
