Beginning next week, the first of several candidates
for the post of vice chancellor for Research will visit campus for
meetings with administrators, faculty, staff and students.

set with candidates
Vice chancellor for Research candidates will
visit campus Mon., Oct. 13 and Mon., Oct. 23. The first candidate
is Richard K. Koehn, professor of biology and former vice president
for research at the University of Utah. The second candidate is
P. Michael Conn, associate director and senior scientist at the
Oregon Regional Primate Research Center and special assistant to
the president and professor of physiology and pharmacology at Oregon
Health Sciences University.
Rosenberg wary of
ballot questions
State Senator Stanley Rosenberg (D-Amherst) encouraged
members of the Faculty Senate and others attending the Oct. 5 senate
meeting to vote against propositions 4 and 6 on the November ballot
because of the adverse affect they would have on the state's income.

A six-member team from the Council on Education
for Public Health (CEPH) is scheduled to visit the School of Public
Health and Health Sciences Oct. 16-18 as part of a re-accreditation
review. The school was last re-accredited five years ago.
Nieto discusses how
teachers persevere amid challenges
A talk by Education professor Sonia Nieto will
open the 2000-2001 Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series on Tuesday,
Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Nieto's talk is titled "What
Keeps Teachers Going in Spite of Everything?" The event is
free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

collaborate on new production of 'The Misanthrope'
Amherst theater-goers will have a rare opportunity
next week to see a commissioned play before it makes its professional
debut in San Francisco. The local production of the new English
verse version of Moliere's "The Misanthrope" by alumna
Constance Congdon, '82G, is being directed by Theater professor
Virginia Scott, stars alumnus Robert Wu, '97, and runs Oct. 18-21
in the Curtain Theater.
