planning priorities
Addressing deans, department heads and chairs,
and campus staff in Academic Affairs, Research and University Outreach
on Tuesday, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost
Cora Marrett announced plans to form several faculty committees
to study key issues affecting the future of the campus.

Astute users of the campus's "News and Information"
Web page, the start-up site for most Web users on campus, may have
noticed that the Office of Information Technologies added a new
link over the Labor Day weekend.
University offers
a top-value education: Kaplan/Newsweek ranks campus high
The campus's reputation for providing a quality
education at an affordable price has received another boost, this
time from the Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog 2001, which
ranked the University among the top schools offering the best value
for students' tuition dollars. The catalog describes best value
as the quality of education received versus cost.
Faculty Senate convenes
fall term Sept. 21
The Faculty Senate will hold its first meeting
of the academic year Sept. 21 in Herter 227 at 3:30. The
meeting will feature an address by state Rep. Ellen Story (D-Amherst),
remarks by the campus's principal administrative officers and outgoing
Rules Committee chair Joseph Larson, the election of two members
and a chair for the Rules Committee, and annual reports, in addition
to other business.

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education is
scheduled to meet in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center
Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 9:30 a.m.
Dale brings ACE experience
home
Fresh from a year as an American Council on Education
(ACE) fellow, Elizabeth Dale is in a new role on campus as special
assistant for Planning and Development in the Chancellor's Office.

More than 1,000 expected
to attend Marxism conference
Rethinking Marxism," a publication of the
Association for Economic and Social Analysis, is hosting its fourth
international "gala conference," Marxism 2000, Sept. 21-24
at the University. The association is a nonprofit educational institution
located in the Department of Economics.
Tough contests dot
men's basketball schedule
The 2000-01 men's basketball schedule features
14 games against teams that participated in postseason play a year
ago, and a minimum of 19 regional or national television broadcasts,
according to the slate released last week by the Athletic Department.
UMass, Hokkaido students
display art
More than 60 works of art by students at the
University and in Hokkaido, Japan will be exhibited through Sept.
22 at the Student Union Art Gallery. The exhibit is part of a celebration
marking the 10th anniversary of a sister-state relationship between
Massachusetts and the prefecture of Hokkaido.
