Stonewall Center plans open house

The Stonewall Center, an educational resource center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of the Five College community, is hosting an open house on Thursday, Sept. 7, 4-6 p.m. in Crampton House in Southwest.

Munchies and beverages will be available.

The event is not wheelchair accessible. For information, call 5-4824.

TIAA-CREF retirement counseling sessions

TIAA-CREF is offering retirement counseling sessions on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 14, 9 a.m.-3:15 p.m. in 901 Lincoln Campus Center.

Employees with questions about the Optional Retirement Program, tax-deferred annuities or retirement savings are welcome to attend.

Mullins Center holds part-time job fair

The Mullins Center is conducting a part-time job fair on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 6-9 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room on the center's third floor.

Supervisors will be on hand to discuss openings in the box office, operations and event services.

Those who cannot attend the event may also apply in-person during business hours at the Mullins Center management offices on the second floor. For additional information, call 5-3001.

Margulis to address Retired Faculty Association

The first fall meeting of the Retired Faculty Association is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13 in 904-908 Lincoln Campus Center.

The guest speaker will be Distinguished University Professor Lynn Margulis of the Department of Geosciences, who will discuss "Evolution and the Changing Earth."

The meeting begins at 10 a.m. with coffee, followed by a business meeting
at 10:30. Margulis will speak at 11.

All retired faculty and librarians, their spouses and surviving spouses are welcome. The association extends a special invitation to recently retired persons.

Library tours

Tours of the Du Bois Library will be offered Sept. 5-8 and 11-15 at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The tours leave from the entrance lobby and last about 45 minutes. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend. Tours are also available at other times by appointment. Call the Reference Desk (5-0150) to arrange a group or individual tour.

Call the Biological Sciences Library (5-2674) or the Physical Sciences and Engineering Library (5-1370) to arrange tours in the science libraries.

Research services and resources session for new faculty

New faculty are invited to attend a luncheon presentation titled "Introduction to Sponsored Research Services and Resources" on Friday, Sept. 22 from noon-2 p.m. in the Top of the Campus restaurant.

Each year Bruce McCandless, director of the Office of Research Affairs, presents the program for new faculty to introduce the "lay of the land" regarding sponsored research activities on campus.

Walk-in TB testing clinics

University Health Services (UHS) will be holding walk-in TB testing clinics for new students and employees in the Lincoln Campus Center. The clinics will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

The dates and locations are as follows: Sept. 6, 8, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 25, 27 and 29 in room 168C; Sept. 22 in room 811-815.

On those dates, appointments for TB tests to be performed or read will not be available at the Health Center.

Eldercare support group forming

The Employee Assistance Program is forming a support group this fall for staff and faculty members who are caring for elderly relatives or other family members. The meetings will be held every two weeks at the University Health Services. A time has not been established and input from potential participants would be useful. The most likely times would be either noon-1 p.m., or 4-5 p.m.

Volunteer readers needed by Disability Services

The campus has many students who are blind or visually impaired and need assistance to read course materials. The Student Support Program is looking for volunteers to read textbooks, handouts, articles, assignments and examinations.

Early payroll deadline for Labor Day

Labor Day will be observed as a holiday on Monday, Sept. 4. All departments should submit Weekly Time and Attendance Reports and student and non-student payroll by noon on Friday, Sept. 1.

Whipple, Rudy to speak at Sports Luncheon

Football coach Mark Whipple and women's soccer coach Jim Rudy will be the featured speakers at the weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at noon in 1009 Lincoln Campus Center.

Volunteers needed for New Student Convocation

Faculty, staff and other University community members are needed to serve as ushers and greeters at the annual New Student Convocation on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. in the Mullins Center.

All University community members are invited to participate in welcoming the Class of 2004.

Volunteers should report to the north doors of the Mullins Center at
7 p.m. Attire for the event is casual -- organizers suggest that people wear UMass attire.

Survival Center sponsors used furniture sale

The Amherst Survival Center is holding a used furniture sale on the Amherst Town Common on Saturday, Sept. 9, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The center is accepting donations of items for the sale, including tables, bed frames, chairs and couches. Items may be dropped by appointment or brought to the common on the day of the sale. Home pickup in the local area may also be arranged in the 10-day period preceding the sale.

The center charges $7 per donated item to cover disposal cost for unsold furniture. For information, call 549-3968.

Central Gallery taking proposals for exhibitions

Central Gallery (formerly Wheeler Gallery) is accepting proposals from local artists for solo or group exhibitions during the 2001-02 academic year.

Proposals should include a one-page project description, a statement by the artists and their resumes and exhibition records, 20 slides and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
