The Northampton Department of Public Works
has approved plans to place a bronze plaque at the site where
UMass Extension employee Jean Hosmer was fatally shot by her estranged
husband. The memorial received the go-ahead on June 28.
The 11-by-16-inch plaque will be set flush in the Center Street
sidewalk near where Hosmer died. The memorial, which is being
paid for by a citizens' group, will carry a 15-word inscription
and the date of Hosmer's death, Oct. 25, 1999. Plans call for
the plaque to be installed by this October.
Hosmer, 45, was shot by William Bernotas, a staffer with the
Office of Information Technologies, minutes after she renewed
a restraining order against him. Bernotas, 46, then fatally shot
himself.
