Privatization Foes Pin Hopes on State Audit

Textbook Annex manager Scott Cashman and John Kuusisto, University Store manager, said they are "dismayed" at the University's selection of Follett Higher Education Group of Chicago's bid to run the operations they currently supervise; however they expressed confidence that a mandatory review of the proposed contract by the state's auditor would serve the best interests of the University.

Panel Approves Marine Science
Graduate School

A proposed Intercampus Graduate School in Marine Science and Technology (IGSMST) moved a step closer to becoming a reality this week as a Board of Trustees committee approved creation of the four-campus program. Final approval of the measure is expected when the full board meets in Boston Feb. 2.

Alumnus Jester Hairston Dies at 98: Actor-Composer Helped Preserve Negro Spirituals
Jester Hairston, who gave up studies at Massachusetts Agriculture College in the 1920s before going on to a career than spanned movies, television, radio, composing, arranging and choral conducting, died Jan. 18 in Los Angeles. He was 98.

New Stop Light Planned for
Campus Intersection

A new traffic signal is expected to go into operation early next week at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue, Governors Drive and Holdsworth Way, the site of a fatal pedestrian accident last year.

Engineering Student Redesigns Casing for Deodorant, Wins National Contest
Nearly two years ago, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering student Nathaniel Mulcahy bumped into the bathroom sink, and his Mennen Speed Stick smashed to the floor. "What a lot of bits of plastic," the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering senior thought as he cleaned up the mess. Then he decided to build a better deodorant stick. Mulcahy's resulting "Speedy Speed Stick" led him to win the student contest at the 1999 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Nashville, Tenn., late last year.
