Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.  The psychology major prepares students to be successful in a wide range of careers including therapy, counseling, education, business, data analytics, medicine, law, and beyond. Coursework emphasizes both theoretical and empirical approaches to understanding social interaction, cognitive processes, human development, mental health, and behavioral neuroscience.

Our undergraduate Psychology major curriculum is designed to support five major student learning goals, as outlined by the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major, v. 3.0 (2023):

  1. Content knowledge and applications.  Understand key concepts, principles, and theories in psychological science and develop knowledge of psychology’s major subfields.
  2. Scientific inquiry and critical thinking.  Design, interpret, and evaluate psychological research including the use of statistics to evaluate quantitative research findings.
  3. Values in psychological science.  Employ ethical standards in research and practice, develop interpersonal and intercultural responsiveness, and apply psychological principles to strengthen community and improve quality of life.
  4. Communication, psychological literacy, and technology skills.  Write and present effectively for different audiences, using technology where appropriate.  Evaluate and draw conclusions from psychological sources and research.
  5. Personal and professional development. Cultivate workforce collaboration and project management skills and develop direction for a career after graduation.

The Psychology major at UMass also introduces students to the APA’s Integrative Themes of Psychological Science:

  • Psychological science relies on empirical evidence and adapts as new data develop.
  • Psychological science explains general principles that govern behavior while recognizing individual differences.
  • Psychological, biological, social, and cultural factors influence behavior and mental processes
  • Psychological science values diversity, promotes equity, and fosters inclusion in pursuit of a more just society.
  • Our perceptions and biases filter our experiences of the world through an imperfect personal lens.
  • Applying psychological principles can change lives, organizations, and communities in positive ways
  • Ethical principles guide psychological science research and practice.
