Psychology Major Checklist

Required courses for completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology
Courses do not necessarily have to be taken in this order – check prerequisites for each requirement below

     Psychology 100 – Introductory Psychology

Psychology 100 is a prereq for all psychology courses numbered 200 and above.

     Psychology 240 – Statistics in Psychology

Prereq: Math 101 & 102 or higher math OR Statistics 111 OR score of 20 or higher on the Algebra portion of the Math Placement test. Prereq: A grade of C- or better in Psych 100. Students may pre-register for Psych 240 while completing Psych 100, but if the final grade is not C- or better, the registration will be canceled.

     Psychology 241 – Methods of Inquiry in Psychology

Prereq: a grade of C- or better in Psych 240. Students may pre-register for Psych 241 while completing Psych 240, but if the final grade is not C- or better, the registration will be canceled. To graduate with the major within 4 years, Methods should be completed by the end of Junior year.

     One Core A Course:

Psychology 314 – Cognitive Neuroscience OR
Psychology 315 – Cognitive Psychology OR
Psychology 320 – Learn and Think

Psych 100 & 330 are prerequisites for Psych 314. Psych 241 is a prerequisite for Psych 315 and 320.

     One Core B Course:

Psych 330 – Introduction to Neuroscience

     Two Core C Courses:

Psychology 350 – Developmental Psychology
Psychology 360 – Social Psychology
Psychology 380 – Adult Psychopathology (formerly Abnormal Psychology)

     Psychology 337 – Junior Year Writing Seminar

This class can be taken as a Junior or a Senior. Psych 337 is a requirement for primary (not secondary) Psych majors.

     One advanced Psychology lab, seminar, or small course (minimum 3 credits):

Choose from Psychology: 391*, 430, 480, 481, 486, 491*, 530, 535, 580, 581, 586, 591*). With few, if any, exceptions, completion of Psych 241 is a prereq for entering these classes. These classes have letters following in SPIRE (e.g., 391AA), so do not use “is exactly” to look up. Do not use the outdated and incomplete course list in the SPIRE ARR to find these courses.

     Two Psychology electives numbered 200 and above

Each must be a minimum of 3 credits. One must be a regular course, the other may be an internship, research assistantship, teaching assistantship, or independent study. Any Psych course 200 level or higher and 3 credits or more that is not being used to fulfill a different psych requirement can be used here.

     Psych 494PI – Professional Development in Psychology (Integrative Experience Course)

This 1-credit course, when taken in combination with a Psych 391 seminar, will satisfy the IE requirement. The same 391 seminar may also fulfill a lab/seminar/small course requirement. 494PI and 391 do not need to be taken in the same semester. Psych 494PI is a requirement for primary (not secondary) Psych majors.

Other requirements for graduation:

  • Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the Psychology major and overall.
  • Courses taken P/F may not be counted towards the major except for internships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships.
  • Students pursuing a B.A. degree must satisfy the CNS foreign language requirement.
  • Students pursuing a B.S. degree must complete 60 credits in courses in the College of Natural Sciences or with R2,BS or PS general education designations.
  • Students must complete the General Education requirements as well as a total of 120 credits.
