"Advancing Evidence-Based Palliative Care for Persons Living With Dementia and their Caregivers from Health System Implementation to Empowering Caregivers Directly"

Dr. Brody will discuss the opportunities and challenges of implementing high quality, evidence-based interdisciplinary care to address palliative needs of persons living with dementia and their caregivers in the community, from home health, hospice, and emergency department to initiated care through the lens of large-scale pragmatic trials. This work uses a mixture of clinical decision support, training and quality improvement approaches, and raises the need to move further downstream from the health system to directly empower caregivers through technology assisted support. He will also discuss how emerging technologies such as mHealth and artificial intelligence can reach those who are most at risk for receiving poor care, including those from marginalized backgrounds and rural environments.

Ab Brody, PhD, RN, FAAN, FPCN is the Mathy Mezey Professor of Geriatric Nursing, Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU. He is a leading expert in developing the science of equity focused pragmatic trials, focused primarily on implementation of evidence-based, technology assisted, practices in geriatrics and palliative care in the real world. He has developed the Aliviado Health program that seeks to help interdisciplinary clinical teams across settings to provide high quality, team-based care to persons living with dementia and their care partners and a companion AI assisted symptom management mHealth app for caregivers.
