Dr. Barcelona will explore the epidemiology of perinatalhealth disparities, focusing on the impact of race andracism in research and healthcare. She will highlight howracism leads to worse health outcomes for women of color, particularly Indigenous, Native American, and Blackwomen. Dr. Barcelona will share findings from her researchon how structural racism at the individual, institutional, andcommunity levels fuels these inequities.

Her NIH-funded study investigates how epigenetics linkmultilevel racism to preterm birth, while her Gordon andBetty Moore Foundation study uses machine learning toanalyze stigmatizing language in clinical records and itsconnection to pregnancy-related complications. Dr.Barcelona will provide actionable recommendations forclinicians on language to avoid in documentation andoutline future research directions.
