The goal of this assessment is to ensure our administrative structures and practices are optimally aligned to meet future needs, and to advance our strategic priorities, leverage the diverse talents of our community, and support the success of each member of the University.
While the project is being sponsored by the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice Provost for Finance and Administration, the project is being led by a steering committee that includes academic, staff, and administrative leadership.
The assessment is anticipated to continue through the Spring 2025 semester. This timeline may vary depending on the needs of the University and schedules.
Segal, a higher education consulting firm, has been engaged to lead this assessment. They will serve as an objective partner in the review process. Several members of the consulting team have held faculty, staff, and executive roles in major public universities and have a deep understanding of higher education practices and culture.
Information will be collected through an inclusive and collaborative process that includes one-on-one and group interviews with approximately 900 faculty, staff, and administrators across all academic, administrative, and support units and entities
Further information will be considered including relevant documents such as background materials, financial data, organizational charts, information related to administrative processes, role/job descriptions, service-level metrics, and other pertinent information.
The people selected for one-on-one or group interviews are intended to represent a diverse cross-section of our campus community in terms of level, experience, roles, and other factors. Each unit will select the individuals to participate. While we would like to talk to everyone, we recognize we do not have the ability to do so.
Additional mechanisms will be leveraged to invite further input. They may include, but are not limited to, feedback portals, surveys, emails, and faculty and staff meetings.
There will be no attribution made to comments during this process. Information received through interviews and other channels will be aggregated and only the common, key themes will be reported out.
Yes, the assessment findings and recommendations will be shared once finalized.
UMass leadership will review and prioritize the recommendations based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, immediate needs and available resources.
We are committed to being transparent throughout this process. Updates and information will be provided through the UMass Operational Excellence Initiative website, campus-wide email messages, and attendance of campus meetings.
