Position Title:   Assistant Provost and Director, Center for Teaching and Learning 

Appointment Type:  Full-time, 12-month academic administrative appointment. This position is intended to be held by a current UMass Amherst faculty member and is structured in accordance with MSP provisions and University policy governing faculty administrative appointments and return rights. 

Reports to:  Associate Provost for Instructional Excellence  

Job Summary 

The Assistant Provost and Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides leadership for campus-wide faculty development and teaching excellence initiatives. The Assistant Provost and Director advances evidence-based, inclusive, and innovative teaching practices that support undergraduate and graduate education across all colleges and schools. Working collaboratively with academic and administrative partners, the Assistant Provost and Director ensures CTL programs align with University strategic priorities, student success goals, and evolving approaches to teaching and learning. 

Essential Functions 

Strategic Leadership for Teaching Excellence:   Leads the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive, campus-wide faculty development strategy aligned with UMass Amherst strategic priorities. Identifies emerging trends in pedagogy, instructional innovation, accessibility, and educational technology and integrates them into CTL programming. Uses data-informed approaches to evaluate program effectiveness and institutional impact. 

Faculty Development and Support:  Oversees the design and implementation of new and existing faculty development programs addressing inclusive pedagogy, large gateway courses, teaching across modalities, teaching with and about artificial intelligence, and other high-impact teaching practices. Promotes faculty engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Provides consultation, resources, and programming that support continuous improvement in teaching and learning. 

Cross-Campus Collaboration and Partnership:  Builds and sustains partnerships with Academic Affairs, Deans, Department Chairs, Assessment, Survey, and Effectiveness Research (ASER), Instructional Design, Engagement, and Support (IDEAS), libraries, and other campus stakeholders. Aligns CTL initiatives with curriculum design, assessment, and student success efforts across academic programs. 

Instructional Design and Learning Technologies:  In collaboration with the IDEAS team and other partners, champions the effective use of instructional design expertise and learning technologies, including the Canvas learning management system, as appropriate. Supports equitable and accessible teaching and learning environments through thoughtful and strategic adoption of instructional technologies. 

Organizational Leadership and Administration: Provides leadership and supervision for CTL staff, including work planning, performance management, and professional development. Oversees CTL operations, budgets, and resources in accordance with University policies and procedures. 

Other Functions 

Performs other duties as assigned in support of University teaching and learning goals. 

Required Qualifications 

  • Earned terminal degree (PhD, EdD, MFA, JD, or equivalent). 
  • Current UMass Amherst faculty member holding a tenured or continuing appointment, consistent with MSP eligibility requirements. 
  • Demonstrated experience in faculty development, undergraduate and/or graduate teaching, academic innovation, or student success initiatives. 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide organizational leadership, manage teams, and build collaborative relationships across units. 
  • In-depth knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices and pedagogical research. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Rank of Full Professor or Senior Lecturer II. 
  • Experience leading institutional or cross-unit change initiatives. 
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching and/or leading teaching excellence initiatives. 

Working Conditions 

Typical office environment with regular use of computers and standard office equipment. Occasional evening or event-related work may be required. This is a 12-month appointment with expectations of year-round engagement aligned to the academic calendar.
