    Laura M. Haas, an IBM Fellow at IBM Research – Almaden, known for her foundational research on information integration technology, has been named dean of the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

    Haas, who joined IBM in 1981 and was named an IBM Fellow in 2009 in recognition of her career accomplishments, will assume her duties at the college on Aug. 1, says UMass Amherst Provost Katherine Newman, who announced the appointment.

    Tricia R. Serio, professor and head of the department of molecular and cellular biology at the University of Arizona, has been named dean of the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst by Provost Katherine S. Newman. Serio is expected to assume her new duties on campus in August 2017.

    Serio will take over from Steven Goodwin, who is stepping down after leading the college and one of its predecessors, the College of Natural Resources and the Environment, since 2000.

    The University of Massachusetts Amherst has appointed Cynthia I. Gerstl-Pepin of the University of Vermont (UVM) to be the new dean of its College of Education, effective July 1, 2017.

    Gerstl-Pepin, who is currently associate dean of UVM’s College of Education and Social Services (CESS), will succeed Robert Feldman, the deputy chancellor who has served as interim dean of the college since last February.

    University of Miami professor Laura P. Kohn-Wood, a finalist for dean of the College of Education, will make a public presentation on Monday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. in 102 Furcolo Hall.

    Tricia Serio, head of the department of molecular and cellular biology at the University of Arizona and a finalist for dean of the College of Natural Sciences, will make a public presentation on Monday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in S330 Life Sciences Laboratories.

    A. Lin Goodwin, a finalist for the Dean of the College of Education, will make a public presentation on Friday, November 4 at 2:45pm in 101 Furcolo Hall.   Goodwin is a vice dean and professor in the department of curriculum and teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University.

    Cynthia I. Gerstl-Pepin, a finalist for dean of the College of Education, will make a public presentation on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 2:45 p.m. in 101 Furcolo Hall.Gerstl-Pepin is currently associate dean for academic affairs and research at the College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont.Robert Feldman is the interim dean of the College of Education. The search for a permanent dean is chaired by John Hird, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

    Two more finalists for dean of the College of Natural Sciences will make public presentations in the coming week. The schedule is as follows:

    Peter Wainwright, interim dean of the College of Biological Sciences and distinguished professor at the University of California, Davis; Monday, Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m. in S330 Life Sciences Laboratories (LSL).

    Farshid Hajir, professor and head of the department of mathematics and statistics; Thursday, Nov. 3 at 4:30 p.m. in S330 LSL.

    Search Committees for the Deans of the Colllege of Natural Sciences, the College of Education and the College of Information and Computer Sciences, have been diligently working with search firms to find a new Dean for each of the Colleges.  The search committee for CNS, co-chaired by Deans Marjorie Aelion and Tim Anderson, will begin bringing in finalists the week of October 24th, while the search committee for the College of Education, chaired by Dean John Hird, will begin bringing in finalists the week of October 31st.  The search committee for CICS, co-chaired by Deans Mark Fuller and John McCarthy, will be brining finalists to campus in early December.
