    Laura M. Haas, an IBM Fellow at IBM Research – Almaden, known for her foundational research on information integration technology, has been named dean of the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

    Haas, who joined IBM in 1981 and was named an IBM Fellow in 2009 in recognition of her career accomplishments, will assume her duties at the college on Aug. 1, says UMass Amherst Provost Katherine Newman, who announced the appointment.

    Tricia R. Serio, professor and head of the department of molecular and cellular biology at the University of Arizona, has been named dean of the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst by Provost Katherine S. Newman. Serio is expected to assume her new duties on campus in August 2017.

    Serio will take over from Steven Goodwin, who is stepping down after leading the college and one of its predecessors, the College of Natural Resources and the Environment, since 2000.

    The University of Massachusetts Amherst has appointed Cynthia I. Gerstl-Pepin of the University of Vermont (UVM) to be the new dean of its College of Education, effective July 1, 2017.

    Gerstl-Pepin, who is currently associate dean of UVM’s College of Education and Social Services (CESS), will succeed Robert Feldman, the deputy chancellor who has served as interim dean of the college since last February.

    The draft was produced by the UMA-ACE Committee chaired by Professor Joseph Berger and Mzamo Mangaliso.  The Draft Plan will be discussed at the Faculty Senate Meeting on October 8, and subsequently with associated Faculty Senate Councils and Committees, and with any interested faculty.

    A search has been launched for Dean of the College of Information and Computer Sciences.  The search committee is co-chaired by Dean Marjorie Aelion, School of Public Health and Health Sciences, and Steve Goodwin, Dean of the College of Natural Sciences.  Search committee members are Distinguished Professor Jane Fountain, Political Science, Public Policy and Administration; Professor Aura Ganz, Electrical and Computer Engineering; Distinguished Professor Lila Gierasch,  Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Professor Farshid Hajir, Dept. Head, Mathematics and Statistics; Professor Traci Hess, Isenberg School of Management; Associate Professor James Kitts, Sociology; Professor Brian Levine, Computer Science; Professor Andrew McCallum, Computer Science; Mr. Robert Sproull, Adjunct Professor, Computer Science; Professor Thai Thayumanavan, Chemistry; and Distinguished Professor Don Towsley, Computer Science.

    John A. Hird has been appointed dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, effective April 1. Interim dean since April 2014, Hird previously served as senior associate dean of the college and chair of the political science department. A member of the faculty since 1989, he was the founding director of the Center for Public Policy and Administration and the master’s program in public policy and administration from 1998 to 2006.

    Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, the Kathe Tappe Vernon Professor of Biography and chair of the department of African and African-American studies at Dartmouth College, has been named the new dean of the Commonwealth Honors College beginning July 1. Previously, she was professor of English and director of Africana Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University and professor of English and associate dean of the faculty at Vassar College.

    A  search for the Dean of Social & Behavioral Sciences was launched in late November.

    A search for the dean of Commonwealth Honors College (CHC) is being launched, according to Provost Katherine Newman.

    “This is a critically important position as the campus positions itself to be the destination of choice for talented, diverse undergraduates from the Commonwealth and beyond,” said Newman.

    The search committee is chaired by John McCarthy, vice provost for Graduate Education, dean of the Graduate School and Distinguished Professor in the department of linguistics.

    Elizabeth (Betsy) Dumont of the Biology department, has been appointed Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, effective September 25, 2014.
