Tricia Serio
Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Professor Serio received her BS in Molecular Biology from Lehigh University in 1991 and her PhD in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics at Yale University in 1997. Following postdoctoral studies at the University of Chicago and at Yale University, she joined the faculty at Brown University in 2002 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2008. In 2012, she joined the faculty at the University of Arizona as Professor in Molecular and Cellular Biology before joining the University of Massachusetts Amherst as Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2017.
Serio was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellow, a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Postdoctoral Fellow, and a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences. She is also the recipient of the Howard Temin Award from the National Cancer Institute and the Mid-Career Award for Research Excellence from the American Society of Cell Biology and an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Her research addresses the cellular regulation of self-perpetuating protein conformations in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Focusing on the appearance, persistence and reversal of these protein states, her work provides a model for the mechanistic understanding of severe neurodegenerative diseases in mammals and strategies to reverse them.
Serio has been active in academic administration throughout her career, serving as graduate program director at Brown University, department head at the University of Arizona, and Dean of the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In 2022, she was named Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
