Students currently in or beyond the second year of their doctoral studies are eligible to apply for summer language and training grants for the following activities:

  • Participating in intensive Summer Language Institutes.
  • Participating in the Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research, ICPSR’s Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research, or other summer methods workshops or short courses.

Application deadline:  March 15

Application requirements

Students applying for summer research and training grants should email a proposal that includes:

   a) Application form

   b) Specify the summer language institute or methods workshops you wish to attend and how it relates to and facilitates your proposed dissertation research.

   c) Itemized budget. Note that the maximum award is $2,500, and that funded proposals may receive only partial support.

   d) Letter of support from a faculty advisor

   e) List of any previous Summer Research/Training Grants you have received from the department. Include the amount(s) awarded.

 

Selection criteria

Preference will be given to students who are farther along in the program, but all students in satisfactory progress are eligible to apply.

Preference will be given to students who have not received prior funding for research or language training.  The amount of other grants previously received or concurrently receiving will also be considered.

The Graduate Studies Committee will review all applications and announce awards by April 1.
