“Without a good education, you don’t know what you don’t know,” says Howard J. Wayne ‘63 (Government), managing partner of Wayne, Richard & Hurwitz, LLC in Boston. “With education, all doors are open for you to walk through.” Indeed, UMass provided a great foundation for Wayne. He was a Maroon Key, Vice President of Phi Sigma Kappa, and Secretary of Inter Fraternity Council. The large university was a very appealing feature. Most importantly, his college career taught him how to study well (he recommends finding a good location like the library stacks!) and encouraged him to develop an outgoing personality. Both skills helped him succeed at Boston College Law School and later in his legal career. “UMass set me on the road to a wonderful life,” he says. The large university was a very appealing feature. It presented him with endless opportunities to take courses in all aspects of life: “from Astronomy to Coaching Basketball,” he says. Wayne attributes much of his success to his outlook on life. He tries to enjoy himself in all regards and to pursue all opportunities fully, whether as the Chair of the Board of Trustees at Salem State University, Chairman of the MA Developmental Disabilities Council, or as a managing partner of two Boston law firms. He encourages current students to search for the same satisfaction: “Follow your heart,” he says, “and you will wind up happy as I was with my career and all the opportunities that came along.”
