Welcome to the Department of Political Science and Legal Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst! We are a vibrant community of scholars and students who share a passion for understanding the complex world of politics and law. Our department is committed to advancing knowledge and fostering critical thinking about the pressing issues of our time, from local challenges to global crises.

As one of the largest departments on campus, we offer a wide range of opportunities for intellectual growth and professional development. We take pride in our diverse and inclusive community, with the highest percentage of "first generation" students in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Political Science systematically examines theory, politics, policy, institutions, and political behavior, while Legal Studies is an interdisciplinary field that explores the complex relationship between law and society. Our undergraduate programs in Political Science and Legal Studies provide students with a strong foundation in theory and methods pertinent to both fields, while also encouraging students to explore their own interests and passions.

Our graduate programs are equally dynamic, with a focus on cutting-edge research and collaboration. We are proud to have a diverse and accomplished faculty who are leaders in their fields, and who are dedicated to mentoring the next generation of scholars and practitioners. Our graduate students benefit from a supportive and collegial environment, as well as ample opportunities for research, teaching, and professional development.

At the heart of our department is a commitment to engaged scholarship and public service. We believe that the study of politics and law is not just an academic pursuit, but a vital tool for shaping a more just and democratic society. Our faculty and students are actively involved in local, national, and global communities, working to address the most pressing challenges of our time.

Whether you are a prospective student, a current member of our community, or a visitor to our website, we invite you to explore the many opportunities and resources available through our department. From cutting-edge research to experiential learning, from student organizations to public events, there is something for everyone here. Join us in our mission to advance knowledge, foster engagement, and make a difference in the world.
