What is the UMPD Self-Defense Program?

The program is eight weeks of instruction consisting of foundation movements and skills that ultimately lead into more complex techniques.  These skills allow for the protection of self and escape from harm if found in a precarious situation.

The UMPD Instructors

Our instructors come from a variety of self-defense and martial arts backgrounds.  Combining years of training and knowledge has resulted in a comprehensive and well-rounded program.  From Taekwondo to kickboxing to jujitsu, we draw on techniques from each to provide safe and simple skills that can be performed by all participants.

What are the classes like?

Our first few classes cover the basics: combative postures, blocking, striking, and kicking.  We then move into escape techniques if an unwanted person ever tries to grab you.  Holds such as bear hugs, headlocks, and even hair pulling are covered using easy to perform controlling techniques.
As the program progresses, the techniques become more advanced.  What if you are thrown to the ground?  We cover that.  What if someone grabs your wrists and won’t let go?  We’ve got skills for that too!

Other Benefits of Self-Defense

Aside from learning skills to protect yourself, you will also benefit from:
•    Building confidence
•    Developing environmental awareness
•    Boosting self-esteem
•    Honing interpersonal skills
•    And making new friends!
