The physics department is seeking Hybrid Teaching Assistants for the Summer Session which runs from May 19 to August 15. You must be available to work in person on campus and on Zoom. There are NO completely remote positions.

There may also be an opportunity for someone to teach Physics 114: Physics of Sound with applications to speech and hearing.

Major duties include holding help room hours in person and on Zoom, running problem solving and discussion sessions in person and on Zoom, and teaching labs in person and on Zoom. Other duties include grading assignments, exams, and lab reports, proctoring in person and online exams, and meeting with the faculty instructor regularly in person and online.

Applicants must have demonstrated excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to a supportive working environment.

Qualities demonstrating excellence in teaching include:

  • A proven history of professional classroom demeanor, including treating students with respect and dignity.

  • If you are interested in teaching Physics 114: Prior history of outstanding teaching or successful completion of a co-teaching mentorship program.

Qualities demonstrating outstanding contributions to a supportive work environment include:

  • An established history of professional and collaborative behavior and conflict resolution with fellow instructors, department staff, and mentors.
  • Proven ability to effectively supervise others, especially peers.
  • Demonstrated ability to receive and respond appropriately to criticism.

NOTE: You should make finding a summer RA a priority since we have a limited number of TA positions available. Unlike the Spring and Fall semesters, you are NOT guaranteed TA support if you do not receive an RA. Even if we can support you, we rarely are able to offer more than 10 hours a week of work.

To apply, please submit a resume or cv, and contact information for 3 references to Chris at certl@umass.edu. If you are interested in teaching Physics 114, you will also need to submit a teaching statement. These materials will be reviewed by the department committee tasked with hiring Summer and Winter teaching staff.

The deadline for applications is April 25.
