Abstract:

This talk presents an introduction to effective theories derived from a canonical formulation of quantum mechanics or gravitational systems. Compared with the traditional approach, the canonical derivation makes it easier to include non-adiabatic effects as well as previously unrecognized modifications of gravity that are fully covariant but cannot be obtained from an action principle for the space-time metric. Physical applications include quantum Higgs inflation, covariant versions of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND), and new coupling terms between gravity and matter.
