With the advent of the "Second Quantum Revolution," the quantum science field is shifting its focus from the investigation of fundamental questions of the quantum reality to the utilization of quantum phenomena for practical purposes: sensing, cryptography, and computation.  The US government's increasing investment in meeting quantum technology goals has created an increasing demand for skilled workers; however, research on quantum education and workforce needs has yielded surprising and intriguing insight into the role of higher education in preparing the quantum workforce.  This talk will focus on new models for upper-division quantum science education currently being implemented at the University of Colorado Boulder.  We will attend to both transformations in classroom instruction in quantum theory and practical workforce development for industry-focused students at both four-year and two-year colleges.  Finally, we will discuss ongoing research to more fully understand the nature of students' engagement with the quantum boom.
