The Philosophy Department was awarded a $15,000 grant from Mass Humanities. The award is to go towards funding a two-week summer philosophy program, Question Everything, for high school students from Holyoke and Springfield. The project director is Professor Julia Jorati. The summer program will be administered jointly by Professor Jorati and Professor Ned Markosian.
The project will involve bringing 15 high school students from the targeted areas to UMass Amherst in July of 2021. The scholars who participate in Question Everything will spend the two weeks of the program living in a university-provided room with total access to the university fitness center, dining halls, and library. They will form a tight-knit community of inquiry in which they will collectively pursue the titular motto of the program. Led by a pair of instructors, the scholars will be introduced to both ageless and cutting edge questions of philosophy. Those instructors will help cultivate an excitement for philosophy and a learner-centered environment in which the scholars are able to bring their unique perspective to bear on those philosophical questions.
Thanks to Julia and Ned, and especially to Patrick Grafton-Cardwell, for your work on this!
